What size is the Newsspotter system?
Compact enough to be carried in a back-pack for Fly-Away use and small enough to be fitted onto a small car for rooftop mounting, NewsSpotter can instantly connect mobile news crews to studios for transmission of live recordings, images and data. Providing native IP connectivity, NewsSpotter is perfectly integrated for the workflows of modern newsgathering operations and is available across KA-SAT’s footprint that covers Europe, North Africa and the UAE.
What is I’m relatively new to this sort of broadcast equipment?
To help broadcasters get the best from the new technology, we offer free training to our new broadcast customers at our headquarters in Bicester, Oxfordshire. The service has been designed to be as simple as possible. It needs just two hours of training in how to use the service. We train them on how to find the satellite and how to use the booking portal, so they can set up the system and get the best from it very quickly.
How do I book transmission time?
The NewsSpotter Service is booked via a self-booking portal or simply via contact with our European HQ in the UK. NewsSpotter is only charged by the time and GB’s transmitted. The ‘Always On’ service is billed monthly as used, also charged by the GB. There are NO monthly fees or pre-purchase bandwidth requirement, unless additional services are demanded.
Does bad weather effect the system?
The honest answer is that it can. But the weather has to be extreme, and the general effect is the signal slows down, so the risk of falling off air is minimal. The overall performance of the KA-Sat NewsSpotter is typically > 99.5%, which is better than fixed-line services.
What size does the Fly-Away pack down to?
The stand is quickly dismantled and packs into a two flight cases along with all other modules. The case complies with ‘In-Hold’ weights and dimensions.
How long does deployment take?
Deployment (classified as from unpacking to ‘live’) typically takes less than 15 minutes.
What is the Shoot & Scoot coverage like?
The standard system is delivered with the Eutelsat Solid State Transceiver (E-Tria) and Pro 2 Broadcast Modem which offers coverage over the entirety of Europe (subject to any local licence restrictions) Eutelsat have a licence which covers 100% of Western Europe and sections of North Africa. The system can now be deployed across the USA using the Viasat Exede Satellites.

Our Dawson embedded software is pre-programmed to search for KA-SAT with the touch of a button. So, like our standard antenna, you don’t need to be a satellite engineer to operate it.

What do I get for the extra cost of the Cobham 8100?
The Cobham Explorer 8100 is the perfect solution for heavy duty deployment, regular broadcasting on difficult terrain in unwelcome conditions. Typically, sudden movements as small as people stepping out of the vehicle or high wind can cause satellite disconnect. Mechanical impacts as small as 0.3 degrees can lead to an immediate loss of signal. The 1M Carbon Fibre Antenna gives improved signal.

How quick is deployment?
A single person, without tools, can deploy the Karbon-75 in just a minute.
How do I acquire satellite signal?
Once you’ve set up the Karbon-75 you use the Ka-Sat Pointer app to connect to the modem, put it into “Install” mode. Then scan azimuth searching for telephone “beep”. Once discovered you can make fine adjustments to achieve peak signal. The terminal will complete the automatic log-in process and then you’re ready for live transmission.
You say it’s lightweight and compact, but just how compact?
The reflector segments, ETRIA, tripod mount and modem backpack all pack into a single padded case. The complete case weighs less than 23kg limit for checked baggage and complies with current IATA airline luggage regulations.
